55 y/o Learning Code! Any Point?

Solved! Go to Solution.

Hello all

This may not be the best place to ask but I am sure that staff can move this if incorrect!

I am 55 years old and have worked all my life with my hands (carpenter etc) but 3 years ago I had health problems and eventually was told that I could no longer do the work I did anymore.

Long story and no need to go there.

So 7 months ago I began to look at learning to code. I can't learn each day (sometimes it isn't possible) but I do what I can.

I haven't written anything in frameworks but only in HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP using MySQL.

I have written two very simple programs which require much more work but I know no developers who could give me any feedback.

So I have three questions.

  1. Is it possible to become employed in this field with no qualifications and such limited experience?
  2. Is it possible to become part of a team once it is known that you are over 55 years old and have such limited time in the field?
  3. Would one of you kind people please have a quick look at what I have done and tell me if I am wasting time or should I continue learning?

Regarding question 3, It may be an issue as the site is account only and I haven't learnt enough of this wonderful resource yet to comprehend how I would 'show' my little project here!

Thank you for any replies.

Not really, no. Majority of places look for someone with either A) a CS Degree, B) Years of Experience, or (most likely) C) Both.

Being 55 years old is fine, having next to no experience is not.

You should continue to learn, but as a _hobby_, not for employment. If you become proficient at programming and want to earn a bit of money on the side, try [Fiver](https://www.fiverr.com/search/gigs?query=+programmer&filter=auto&show_join=true&utm_source=google&ut...) or something...

My thought is that you should not allow anyone to tell if you can or cannot succeed. If you have a dream, you should go for it. I know at least one company, Revature, that is constantly advertising for developers and only requires a 2 year degree.

Re: 55 y/o Learning Code! Any Point?

Darn. Thank you both for your replies, very good of you.

After a week of no reply and 200 odd views I had given up (pretty much the same as the emails I sent to companies asking the same questions and getting zero replies).

I comprehend that which you both have stated and have come to a conclusion (even though no one has actually looked at the applications I have made).

While I disagree with the need for experience (time served) over knowledge (learnt process) I do realise that I will not be welcomed into the current parody portrayed via corporate stupidity.

Thus I shall self authenticate!

I will continue to make my own applications and serve them to the public …. myself.

I figure, 6 to 12 months.

Again thank you both for your considerations, it was most kind.

Re: 55 y/o Learning Code! Any Point?

Hey! My advice is to find your niche. If you spend time focused on the stuff that everyone else is it will be more difficult. I am personally involved heavily in the Julia Programming Language and just by the fact that there are so few people in the community I have been able to benefit career-wise in less than a year.

Thank you my friend : )
I have never heard of Julia but a quick look proves that the concept of a base structure inherent in all languages is correct.

Nice : )

Just by chance, I happen to be the one that added that example to the website. Enjoy learning.

Impossible is just a word meaning "what has not been achieved yet."

And no one can predict the future. No one on this planet can say, "Yes," or "No," and be guaranteed to be accurate.
