do I need a folder or not?

Hi all,

I'm new to all this. I've followed a youtube tutorial and successfully uploaded my site to github pages and the site runs perfectly - I did that by creating a repository "better4living.github.io"(then drag&drop all files to github.com web), which I totally could not understand considering info I read in documentation - according to documentation  I could imagine my site's url should be "better4living.github.io/better4living.github.io", but in fact it's "better4living.github.io".

Could anybody please tell me how to understand this?  .e.g. what's the difference among repository, folder and project?

And till now I'm just doing a test, finally my purpose would be pointing to my own domain, and I'd prefer NO folder in the url, so which method should I take? should I create a folder?

Re: do I need a folder or not?

Hi @better4living,

Welcome to the Github Community Forum!

I think you are making some confusion around github profile and github pages.

The site url of your pages is: better4living.github.io.

Than you have your github account profile at: github.com/better4living.

Could anybody please tell me how to understand this?  .e.g. what's the difference among repository, folder and project?

This 3 words: repository, folder and project are physically the same, the real difference is in the logical and concept behind them... You can undestand a git repository as a shared directory (folder) through git protocol that can transfer data from a client to a server using git commands. So the repository is the name to describe a directory with the git protocol in it that link (or not) to a repository locate on a server (like github). The third word you used project is simply a directory/repository with a defined goal to reach. A project can be something like: "I want to create a web application that solve a factorial calculation" or "Creation of a stand alone application to take notes". It is NOT a project a directory where you put your films or images.

And till now I'm just doing a test, finally my purpose would be pointing to my own domain, and I'd prefer NO folder in the url, so which method should I take? should I create a folder?

You are not supposed to create more that the index page if you want only that.

I hope I have solved your doubts 🙂

Re: do I need a folder or not?

Thank you so much for your detailed reply, sir.

I guess I did not make my question very clear, username appears in url? makes questions difficult to describe. Please let me express in other words :

1, when I was creating my REPOSITORY, I typed "better4living.github.io", instead of "better4living (or any name else)". I want to understand why the former one works?(so many tutorials out there but I only see this method in one tuts) - I directly got a site "better4living.github.io", exactly as I wanted, without any following path.

Thus my 2nd question: is that the correct way to achieve what I wanted? Is that the only way?

And, can I replace the word "better4living" to some word else? or it has to be the same as my username?
