Writer Looking for Volunteer Technical Writing Projects

Hi. I’ve been a professional writer for over a decade. I am currently looking to break into technical writing on software/app projects.

I am willing to provide free help on a project. The best fit for me will be one where a little assistance can be provided on programming issues when needed.

My ideal project would be software documentation but I’m open to the right project in any area. I’m just not a programmer, which can actually be a good thing as I will dissect it from a completely beginner level.

We’re always looking for help, and are frequently available and willing to provide assistance (sometimes you may have to wait 1-4 days to receive an answer in the chat room). If you’re interested in reviewing or even making minor edits to our documentation, it would be appreciated.

Lots of open source projects need help with documentation. As a matter of fact, it was the number one cited problem with open source projects in GitHub’s Open Source Survey last year. I know that we could always use some help with the Atom Flight Manual (repo).

Hi Lee-

Like the OP, I’m looking to get some experience in technical writing and eventually open source contributing. Could you guys still use some help with the AFM? I do have some amateur coding experience; I use Sublime Text but maybe I will become a convert! I also have a dozen or so years of academic copy editing experience.

If you could direct me to a spot in the AFM, that would be great.

Thanks, Dan

As with any open source repository, the best place to start after the README is the CONTRIBUTING guide.

I hope that helps!

I wouldn’t mind help with some user documentation for my project if you (or any one else reading this thread) is interested.

You mean you can work for free. I’m really looking for volunteer technical writers on web development fields on my website http://webmobtuts.com

I’m also looking to get into technical writing by volunteering.  I don’t know how many hours I could commit a week.  Are any of you guys still looking for writers?  Alternatively, any suggestions for where I should start looking?

Are you still looking for help?
I’ve been a tech writer (not software development) in the IT industry. Focused mainly on user manuals for MS operating systems and CompTia certifications. I’ve also done a lot of testing and technical reviewing.

Let me know if you’re interested. I want to build a portfolio and looking for opportunities. Thank you.

Are you still looking for help?

I am interested. Please let me know further details

This is helpful about creating an amazing Readme file for each repository: https://medium.com/@meakaakka/a-beginners-guide-to-writing-a-kickass-readme-7ac01da88ab3

There is also the User Manual or Contribution Guide. Here is a dedicated website on all this about tech documentation: https://www.writethedocs.org/guide

We’re looking for volunteers to help with technical writing. Please DM me for more info.

Hi elillian, is there any way I can contribute to your projects as a volunteer Technical Writer?

We have a lot of work going on here, for the Adventure Game Studio project

If you are interested in helping, take a look at the project, and either open a new issue or reply to one of the existing issues to start a discussion on any topic. The documentation is hosted through GitHub wiki, so after deciding what to work on, the work can be done through it.

I can help edit and proofread your documentation if you’re interested.
Thanks, Ann

I, too, am interested in volunteering to write technical documentation for a project. I am a beginner technical writer looking to build a portfolio in software documentation. I have a certificate in technical writing, and many years working as a technician. I have basic knowledge of programming but have never worked in the field. Let me know if I seem like a good fit for your project.
