Why there is no branch called gh-pages in repository created through Communicating using Markdown

After I completed course Communicating using Markdown I moved onto course Github pages. Following link from there I went to Github Pages and came to know that github looks for branch called gh-pages to deploy site for projects. But in my repowhich was created during course Communicating using Markdown contains no branch called gh-pages. Can anyone please clarify?

Hi, it used to be the case that GitHub Pages used to look for a branch called gh-pages in your repository.

However, whilst it is still possible to use a gh-pages branch, it is now also possible to use your repository’s master branch, or a docs directory in the master branch. You can configure where GitHub Pages should look for your site files in your repository settings.
