Whenever I try and access my the root url of this repository, it’s throwing a 404 error, even though I provided an index.html. What could be going wrong?
What do you mean by root url ? It doesn’t seem like good url to me.
For example I can access my repo with these urls:

Is it possible that you have the wrong branch set to publish the site? By default, GitHub publishes pages from the gh-pages branch which you don’t have. It is possible to serve pages from the master branch, but you need to set that up manually.
