When creating a new repo in GitHub Desktop, it says "This appears to be a Git repository" no matter which location I choose

When creating a new repo in GitHub Desktop, it says “This appears to be a Git repository. Would you like to add this repository instead?” no matter which location I choose to create. When I click “add this repository instead”, it tries to locate my desktop username and cannot find it. What’s going on here?

Check if one of the directories higher in the path were initialized as a repository by mistake (look for a .git/ directory). I’ve seen similar questions here where it turned out someone had initialized their home directory as a repository. :slightly_smiling_face:
