Unable to use keyboard shortcut in Rich Text editor

Hi @nadiajoyce,

I have right now found out that this very editor where I am writing in – titled “Rich Text”, whereas not the HTML one – has a bug as it does not allow any kind of pasting via the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+V (no reaction happens) on Firefox, whereas using the context menu for pasting works. As before, Midori is not affected.

I don’t remember this behavior from earlier, I have just observed it now. I assume this remark relates to the same code and does not constitute thread hijacking.

Also, the HTML validation here does not seem to like kbd tags and also removes the ping to your profile name when I try to add the kbd tag. I do not know yet where I should best submit bugs about this very interface in general.

Hi @socialdarwinist,

Thanks for this feedback! We’re always working to improve GitHub and the GitHub Community Forum. I’ve logged your feedback internally. Though I can’t guarantee anything or share a timeline for this, I can tell you that it’s been shared with the appropriate teams to take a look.

Cheers!

Hi again @socialdarwinist,

I’ve tried what you described about not being able to paste in the Rich Text editor, but was unable to recreate the problem. In Firefox, I was able to paste using “Cmd + V” (on a Mac) without issue. Can you please let me know if you’re still experiencing this particular problem?

Also, I’m going to move this conversation to it’s own thread, since it’s about the Community Forum itself and not the original topic of this thread.

Hi @nadiajoyce

as I have found out by comparing the differences of my Firefox profile and a clean profile and thus reading about:config (after add-ons being excluded), the failure to paste is caused by a specific configuration setting:

dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled – is normally true. It turns out I have at some point disabled it, set it to false, because of, one knows those, misbehaving sites trying to prevent lawful use of the copy and paste functions.

Now the question is if it is actually necessary for the editor to be implemented in a way which entails barring the pasting completely if one has this setting on false – I doubt this though since the GithubGist editor and the CodeMirror editor and many other editors have suffered pasting with it set to false.

Or is the usage of this setting too fringe to challenge the coding of this Rich Text editor?

We’re always happy to hear and take any feedback. I can’t guarantee anything, but it is valuable for us to know these things! We’ll make note of this for future consideration.

Thanks so much @socialdarwinist! Let me know if you have any other questions about this topic.
