Ubuntu images don't work #25496

Hey!

I tried out ubuntu images (all of them) from microsoft/vscode-dev-containers and even though they work just fine on my local VS Code, I could not make them work in Codespaces.

The error I get is:

Failed to connect to the remote extension host server (Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.)

This was tested in an “empty” repo with just a README file. It did work just fine when I tried debian-based images.

Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug in the ubuntu definitions?

Thanks for the report! This is a bug that was recently introduced, and we’re working on fixing it ASAP. In the meantime, if you add an extensions array to your devcontainer.json file, that should workaround the issue. Apologies for the issue!

Hey there - can you include your devcontainer.json and Dockerfile? How are you trying to use the definition? Unfortunately, I’m not able to reproduce your problem. Does this happen when you don’t add a devcontainer.json too?

I have a .devcontainer/devcontainer.json file in the root directory with the following content:

{
  "image": "mcr.microsoft.com/vscode/devcontainers/base:ubuntu"
}

and that’s it 🙂

Thanks for the report! This is a bug that was recently introduced, and we’re working on fixing it ASAP. In the meantime, if you add an extensions array to your devcontainer.json file, that should workaround the issue. Apologies for the issue!
