When I try to run “gh-pages -b master -d build” (which is supposed to help solve the problem with GitHub displaying the “readme” instead of the index file on GitHub Pages) a window pops up asking for my username and password. I enter them, the window prompt disappears, and then nothing happens at all with the Git Bash window. I know that I’m entering the correct username and password because I successfully log in to GitHub with them regularly. Does this have something to do with the switch to tokens?

We have some documentation here that should guide you through creating a token:
We have some suggestions here for caching your GitHub credentials as well.
