Script tags not working in atom

I am not sure if this is the place to send this question, but I’m awfully confused. When I write a script tag that links to an external js file that is located in a different folder in my directory, the entire html file goes gray. When I delete the closing tag, the color returns. I am sure that my syntax is correct, since I copied it directly from a different html file, where the same code did not make the whole file go gray. I would appreciate any help or explanations!

Thank you!

If you have questions about any project hosted on GitHub, the best way to contact the maintainers of that software is to:

  1. Check the README for instructions on how to operate the software, pointers to documentation or troubleshooting info
  2. Check the SUPPORT file, if one exists
  3. Check the CONTRIBUTING guide, if one exists

All of these documents can be found, if they exist, in the repository where you found the software itself.

It just so happens that Atom has a SUPPORT file that shows where best to get support.
