Rasberry Pie 3b+

Hi not sure if this is the right place to place to post this so i apologise now if it is.

Can anyone help with the following.

I have recently purchased a Rasberry Pie 3B+

I have installed a fresh OS of Raspien Stretch and have done sudo update and sudo upgrade.

I have followed the update guide for from git hub on trying to turn it into a portable wireless access point for the following reasons.

  1. To use a media server when travelling on a few weeks’ time go on holiday.

  2. Once I have managed to do this I will either install plex or emby to act as the standalone server.

Try as I might I am unable to get it to work, as I am new to Linux and raspberry pie not sure if I am doing anything wrong.

On the raspberry pie forums someone has advised not to update the pie then try following the guide again, I believe they are saying there maybe be a problem with Raspien stretch making unseen changes to wpa suplicant.

Is there another OS I could use say unbutu or has anyone successfully managed to do this.

I am willing to let someone SSH into my pi to take a look.
Kind regards

Hi and welcome @halfajobj ,

First of all, I would not let any  stranger from the internet SSH into your Raspberry Pi and let them do stuff since your Pi most likely is inside your own home network and you’ll later use that Pi to store (sensitive/personal) files. Imagine if some “helpful” person would inject a bunch of malware to later download all your files and/or intercept your network traffic? Instead, use this as a learning opportunity.

Just leave the Raspbian OS on it and install some applications. To start off, install a VPN (read why below): https://github.com/Nyr/openvpn-install

Then, to use it as a media server, install some cloud software like OwnCloud (https://owncloud.org/) or Syncthing (https://syncthing.net) (it’s difficult to reccomend something since we don’t exactly know what you are trying to achieve). You can now access and upload files to your Raspberry Pi. Consider plugging in a hard drive to bump up the storage.

Let us know if you need any more help.

Why should I use a VPN?

If you use a VPN, the only port you’ll have to open from your home network will be the VPN port. Then, you can access your OwnCloud/Syncthing/… installation trough the VPN. This way you don’t constantly have to panic about security stuff. Google  port forwarding if you need more information about that.

Sorry I should have given more detail.

I am trying to set up on rasberry pi 3b+ access point router so its portable. I then want to either but plex media server or emby on it to act as the server.  I have managed to get access point working on raspien stretch but not plex at the moment.

I would use kodi or osmc but they struggle to play iTunes movies that have DRM removed even though VLC and plex play them fine.

Trying to get my portable media server up running b4 I go away on holiday with the kids

Ah allright, now I get the intention.

To be a bit more specific, when following a guide (this one: https://www.hackster.io/bilbo007/portable-media-server-and-access-point-00f272   for example), what are the specific points you get stuck at?

Well at the moment get stuck installing plex.

i managed to get it installed but i would not pick up my hard drive or usb stick. It would find the hard drive but not the files.

What is the output of  fdisk -l? And could you maybe try using a different filesystem like FAT32 (if you have any empty USB sticks around for example)?
