Push failure for lack of PAT -- but I wasn't asked for it

I am trying to push my local repository to GitHub, and at terminal I typed "git push origin master’. I was not asked for a password. The push failed with these three lines:

remote: Support for password authentication was removed on August 13, 2021. Please use a personal access token instead.
remote: Please see Token authentication requirements for Git operations | The GitHub Blog for more information.
fatal: Authentication failed for ‘https://github.com/jdnourse/forkify-course-video.git/

What could I have done differently? I set up and have the PAT, but I was never asked for it.
