Novice Java Coder - How would I contibut to an OSS please?

Hi,

I am a novice Java programmer and wanted to contribute to an OSS Project.

Does anyone have a suggestion of a project or the best way to pick one / where to go to do this?

Cheers

Craig

Hi @craigburrow404,

Thank you for being here! This post was moved to a different board that fits your topic of discussion a bit better. This means you’ll get better engagement on your post, and it keeps our community organized so users can more easily find information.

As you’ll notice, your topic is now here in the Project Development Help and Advice board. No action is needed on your part; you can continue the conversation as normal here.

github.com has a ‘search’ entry in the upper left corner. Entering “java” returns 1.4M results.

You’d be better off to decide what kind of project would interest you - a game, toy, web, enterprise app, etc. Then perform a search which would return the kind of project, then filter that result set based on “java” as the language.

Also on github.com there is an “issues” link. If you go there and type “help-wanted java” you might find some projects in Java where they are looking for help addressing an issue.

Once you have some possible candidates, you will want to look for other criteria. E.g. if the project is helpful to new contributors - look for a “contributing” file. Looking at the activity level for a project will tell you the popularity of a project. Look for info on building, getting started, tutorials, etc. [Or volunteer to write them if they’re missing!]
