Make Dark Mode a browser setting instead of a user setting

I’m very happy that dark mode has finally arrived. However, I would suggest that you make this not a user-specific setting but a browser-specific setting, as one may want to use different themes on different devices with the same account. E.g. at work during summer I use light mode on my work PC as there’s plenty of sunlight, but I use dark mode on my home PC as I use that more often in the evening and night.

“Default to system” is your friend.

Thanks @adrianghc for the feedback! Would @fschroiff’s suggestion work for you?

I think what they meant is that it should potentially always default to “Default to system”, which I agree with.

That is our plan post beta @jasminnancy! Given we’re still working through the kinks ahead of dark mode GA, we felt it was the right decision to allow users to opt-in. We plan on changing the default to be Default to system after we exit beta!

Hm, it would for the scenario I described, yes. But I noticed another, which is that my mobile browser does not support automatic dark mode for web content, so GitHub would always be light on there despite me wanting it dark. But I recognize that scenario may be too niche for you to consider.

Dear community adms, please update discourse to let it follow browser theme.
