Is the git clone traffic reliable

When viewing the Git Clone traffic graph on my repo I’m regularly seeing stats that look wrong.

So I’m thinking either:

  • my understanding of what the traffic graph means is incorrect
  • the stats are just wrong
  • there is bizarre behaviour going on.

The images shows that on one day I had 138 clones by 6 unique cloners.

This seems incredibly unlikely.
I see these sort of excessive variance on a regular basis.

Could the peak be caused by Actions workflows that need to clone the repository to work with the code? If those peaks happen when you push or do other things that trigger such workflows it’s probably that.

Hadn’t thought of that.

Having thought of it, I would have expected GitHub to exclude workflow clones.
