How can I change the banner of my Github Pages site?

I’d like to change the banner text and insert maybe an image or at least change the color of the banner on my Github Pages site but have been unable to find relevant documentation or forum post about it (which probably speaks to the degree of my newbishness).

There are only two files in my Github Pages repository: README.md and _config.yml. What do I need to do to or have to customize my banner?

Never mind, figured it out.

After some Googling around, I came across Nick Carriato’s helpful series of blog posts on setting up and customizing a Github Pages site. I then figured out that I needed a key file called index.html to exist in a  _layouts folder in my site’s repository. Neither existed, so I just copied the ones from the Github repository of the slate theme I’m using.

Then, I edited the h1 and h2 lines in the header section of the index.html file. I still haven’t figured out how to change the color of the header section, but I guess I will soon.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to add _layouts or index.html, you can also add the following lines to your

_config.yml page which is default added to your repository when you select a theme.
