Feature request: Windows Registry files (.reg) syntax highlighting and language recognition.

Hi. I just made a file ending with the .reg extension in my repo and I was surprised to see that the language bar did not appear for this file, and that there was no syntax highlighting as if this extension wasn’t recognized at all by GitHub.

So, I would like to ask that the .reg extension is also recognized and is syntax highlighted like the other code in other file extensions.

Hi @salviasage,

Thanks for this feedback! We’re always working to improve GitHub and the GitHub Community Forum, and we consider every suggestion we receive. I’ve logged your feature request in our internal feature request list. Though I can’t guarantee anything or share a timeline for this, I can tell you that it’s been shared with the appropriate teams for consideration.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks!

Hi @salviasage,

I talked with our Product team and they pointed me to Linguist which is the open source project that GitHub uses to do syntax highlighting. If you’re interested in adding sytax highlighting to GitHub for a particular language, I recommend checking out how to add a language as Linguist enthusiastically encourages Pull Requests.

The Product team also said that Windows registry files aren’t likely to appear in the language bar stats by default as they are more inline with being data than being a programming language or prose. Assuming syntax highlighting support is added, a user would still need to implement an override to force it to be considered for the stats.

Hope this helps!
