Feature Request: File list truncation in desktop view

When viewed in a browser in Desktop mode, GitHub displays the complete list of files in the root directory above the project README. For projects with many files in the root directory, a user must scroll all the way down the page, past the file list which may be very long, to view the README contents. GitHub mobile pages on the other hand truncate the list entirely and prominently display the README.

I propose that GitHub, when viewed in Desktop mode, also truncate such large lists in favor of more prominantely displaying the contents of the README, with a “click to expand” option.

As an example, the XQEMU project:

Proposed compromise: a truncated list with a “click to expand” button:

Hello @mborgerson

Thank you for your feedback! We’re always working to improve GitHub and the GitHub Community Forum, and we consider every suggestion we receive. I’ve logged your feature request in our internal feature request list. Though I can’t guarantee anything or share a timeline for this, I can tell you that it’s been shared with the appropriate teams for consideration.

Once again, thank you for your input!

Greatly appreciated

I’m glad I search for this topic first.

Long lists of files are especially frustrating. I like the op’s suggestions. But I think there’s an alternative, just place the README at the top of the page. If the repo doesn’t have one then display the repo as it is now.
