Feature request: disable trimming of PR title?

If the PR title is longer than 70 characters, it get’s trimmed-down to 69 characters + “…”, and the rest of the title is put into the body.

I find this highly annoying.
Many times, when opening a PR, I have to:

  • manually delete the “…”
  • cut and paste the rest of the title from the body into the title

I’m the type of person that I would spend 2 hours writing a script than copy/pasting for 30 minutes, so you can see how the above annoys me

I know about the 70-characters convention in git, and I don’t think it’s a good limit for people working in 2021 with 3 screens, with 2K+ resolutions.
One of my screens can fit 357 characters horizontally, which is waaaay more than 70.
Maybe this limit makes sense in some teams, where the management provides the devs with inferior hardware, but in that case, it’s their choice to limit themselves to whatever limit works for them, rather than an arbitrary one, like 70.

This is a feature request to:

  • ideally: completely remove the trimming of the PR title
  • if the above is not possible: add an option, ideally per user (nor per repo), to disable this feature

BTW, I couldn’t find the GitHub issue tracker.

I understand this is where I need to post feature requests/bug reports.

If this is not the case, I would like to ask one of the GitHub staff:

  • to point me to the right place
  • to make it obvious for users how to reach to GitHub with feedback.

There isn’t a public tracker, but you can file requests:

(Just because you can file requests doesn’t mean anything will change.)
