Doing more with Github Project Automation (API, Webhooks?)

I was looking at Github projects, and although it has some automation, I would like to be able to add more.

For example:

  • Move issues to columns based on labels

  • Move issues based on linked PRs

  • Move issues into a board/ out of a board based on labels

I looked at the projects API (still in beta from 2016?) but couldn’t find an easy answer.

Any idea where to start?

Thanks!

Hi @angelsk,

Thanks for this feedback! These things aren’t currently possible, but I can definitely see the value in these types of automation. We’re always working to improve GitHub, and we consider every suggestion we receive. I’ve logged your feature request in our internal feature request list. Though I can’t guarantee anything or share a timeline for this, I can tell you that it’s been shared with the appropriate teams for consideration.

Cheers!

I would like to vote for this feature too.  I’m most interested in automation based on labels for bug triage.  Thanks!

I’m not just going to give this a thumbs up but stress that this would solve some major project management issues for us. We have many community members who are getting way too many notifications from the issue list, so using projects for specifc topics makes sense but triaging from the entire issue list is getting untenable without labels being used as an automated filter for our project boards. Would love to see more capability with project automation, project management!

Hi @nadiajoyce ,

Is there any update on the status of this ? This would greatly improve the workflow for large GitHub repositories with many contributors!

Cheers,
Ian

Hi @ianvernon,

I’m unable to provide any guarantees or timeline for this, but I can confirm it’s been shared with the appropriate teams. To keep an eye out and hear about new features and updates as quickly as possible, I’d recommend following our changelog on the blog. That’s where you’ll hear the most up-to-date information on new GitHub features.

Cheers!

I believe a huge update, to add onto the original writers ideas, is to auto-move columns/boards based on what branch was merged into, I realize there would be a lot of edge cases.
