Docs.github.com access blocked as wrong category on web filtering sites

https://docs.github.com/ is documentation only
it should categorised the same as https://docs.microsoft.com/ which is Technology Internet only (and not include categorization of Office/Business Applications)

This results in the content being blocked by company proxies that block unsafe categories based of web filters such as those provided by Symantec

I submitted a Site Review Request to https://sitereview.bluecoat.com
The reply was

Submitted URL: https://docs.github.com:443/
Suggested category: Technology/Internet
Your comments: https://docs.github.com/ is documentation only it should categorised the same as https://docs.microsoft.com/ which is Technology Internet only (and not include categorization of Office/Business Applications)

After careful evaluation of the Web content submitted, a Web Content Analyst has left this URL categorized as Technology/Internet and Office/Business Applications.

Thank you,

It just a pain having to request exceptions to company web filtering configurations dure to site categorization

Hi @byrneh

I’m an engineer working on docs.github.com. Thanks for letting us know about this issue. Can you clarify what actions need to be taken to resolve this?

‘Office/Business Applications’ are sites with interactive, Web-based office, productivity, collaboration, and business applications including business enablement services. Github.com for example is in this category, which is reasonable as you can uploaded ad shared content as a user of the site.
Bu default you could expect such sites to be blocked by corporate firewall/proxies as they present a data loss risk as content can be uploaded to them.

If https://docs.github.com/ is documentation only (which it should be and no facility for users to upload/share content) it would be better for it not to be categorised as an ‘Office/Business Applications’ as company firewall/proxies using such categorizations are likely to default block access.

As already mentioned Symantec webfiltering have currently categorized as Technology/Internet and Office/Business Applications, so you will need to follow up with symantec (if they have incorrectly categorised) and ask them to change or explain.
