Disable tarball

GitHub offers both repository and releases tarball/zip download.
The problem is that it doesn’t contains also related submodules, so some users frequently report problems because of this. It could be possible to disable archives completely so that we can upload our own source archives?

Hi @redtide,

I recommend this answer from a similar question.

The answer is not related to the the question. @redtide asked about the auto-generated archives from the Tags page. There are two archive files (a zip and a tar.gz) for each tag, which some users assume to be official release artefacts. How can GitHub be told not to generated these archives?

That reply is irrelevant to me since it was given for a malformed question: it makes no sense for people to have git information in a compressed archive, if they want it they simply use git.
I don’t want to use at all GitHub auto-generated archives because they don’t include the necessary files, both for the git branches and tags/releases, so for the former case people will use git, for the latter we already provide our own ci-generated tarballs.
Those archives are OK for simple projects but in other cases they just confuse users, not only in our project but I saw also in others, IMO they should be optional in settings.

Thanks for this feedback!

We’re always working to improve GitHub and the GitHub Support Community, and we consider every suggestion we receive.
You can do so by submitting this through our official product feedback form so that our product team can track your request.

You can also keep an eye on our Changelog as well as the GitHub public roadmap to see features we are working on.

Submitted, thank you!

I recall to have submitted a ticket about this but I don’t find it in My Tickets, strange, should I re submit?

The product feedback form doesn’t leave an open-ended email thread like a typical support ticket does. So you will not see it in your support tickets.

I can confirm that your form was sent to the Product team. So you do not need to complete another one.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Oh OK, being used to systems that keep tickets open and a “My Tickets” in the top right I thought that I did something wrong, thanks for the quick response!
