Commit email default issue causes Identity error

I am getting an error when i try to commit in the repo. I’m not sure where or how to change this. I have been all over the docs and helps. It seems to be an email issue but i have done all the settings over, read some git docs and nothing i can find to change the james@desktop for default identity.

*** Please tell me who you are.

Run

  git config --global user.email "you@example.com"
git config --global user.name "Your Name"

to set your account's default identity.
Omit --global to set the identity only in this repository.

fatal: unable to auto-detect email address (got 'James@DESKTOP-IEC730F.(none)')

Hi @KushKingLA! Welcome to the Community!

It looks like there is no author metadata configured, so you need to run the commands that are being suggested, swapping out the parts in red for your actual details.

Here’s our help article about setting your commit email address:

https://docs.github.com/en/github/setting-up-and-managing-your-github-user-account/setting-your-commit-email-address#setting-your-commit-email-address-in-git

Note - if you want to keep your real email private, you can enable a GitHub provided noreply email address and enter that into the Git settings. Here are the details about enabling that address.

And here’s our article about setting the Git user.name:

https://docs.github.com/en/github/using-git/setting-your-username-in-git

You can put your real name there, or your GitHub username, or whatever you like!
