Claiming a github username

Hi,

I’d like to claim a username that is currently in existence. I looked at the relevant github profile and it seems like there are no repos or any activity at all. I understand things like this can be hidden from public view, so my question is this. Is it possible for github to view (and then determine) if the account is in use, and then allow me to claim the username if the account has no activity?

You will need to report it to Github and hope it falls under the Name Squatting Policy:

Name Squatting Policy

GitHub prohibits account name squatting, and account names may not be reserved or inactively held for future use. Accounts violating this name squatting policy may be removed or renamed without notice. Attempts to sell, buy, or solicit other forms of payment in exchange for account names are prohibited and may result in permanent account suspension.

Thanks. I started a help ticket yesterday; how long should I expect to wait for a reply from github?

So for some reason my help ticket (on this issue) was closed without any prior reason. Do you know why this is the case?

@benjalim It looks as though you may have closed the ticket yourself when you last updated it. I’ve reopened it, but please understand that username claim tickets get addressed typically when account restrictions, account access and billing issues are largely resolved. You’re welcome to ask, but you will have to be patient waiting on an answer.

Ok, thanks for reopening it! Sorry, I’m new to the whole support thing here. By any chance, is there a way for me to call someone on the phone to get this resolved please? Thanks so much.

Ok. Is there a way for me to access premium support for individuals? I can try to sign up for github enterprise but I do not have a company.

If there’s a reason this is an urgent request, please add that information to your ticket. If not, I’m afraid you will simply have to wait- we handle tickets in a priority order so that we can best support those most in need of assistance.
