Changing primary email address

Hi there,

I would like to change my primary mail address in Github, but I’m worried about other things like

  1. Commits I have made with the old mail address and if I change the mail address, what will happen to all the contributions that I made to date?
  2. What happens to the organizational work that I made in Github?

Will changing the address affect these? It would be great if someone could help with this issue, thanks in advance!

Changing which address is your primary address won’t cause trouble, that setting is for emails that GitHub sends you (including security-related ones).

However, if you remove the old email address from your account after changing the primary address the connection between your accounts and commits with that author email address will break. So in most cases it’s best to just leave old addresses on the account and only change which are primary and backup. :slightly_smiling_face:

I appreciate your valuable time and help. But the thing is I’m depreciating one of my mail address due to some security issues, it’s been getting lot’s of spam/phishing mails a while now. Is there any work around?

What exactly are you planning to do with the mail address? Just not use it any more?

Yup, just not to use it anymore and slowly migrate stuffs from old one to new mail address.

Then I see no harm in leaving the old address on your account even after you change the primary address to your new one. That way your commits with the old address will still be assigned correctly, and notifications will go to your new address. :slightly_smiling_face:
