Adafruit IRLib

I’m having a problem with code posted on

https://learn.adafruit.com/using-an-infrared-library/hardware-needed

specifically the program shown under “Decoding IR Data”

When I Upload the sketch to the Arduino Uno, the IDE locks up. It shows

Error compiling for board Arduino/Genuino Uno

but there are no error messages. I have to kill the Java process using Task Manager.

I am running Windows 10 and using a Duino Uno board. The board has worked previously using another Arduino sketch that decoded IR signals from remote controls successfully.

I ran the sketch using arduino_debug.exe - it just says

Loading configuration…
Initializing packages…
Preparing boards…
Starting…

and then a continuous list of error messages including

Exception in thread “AWT-EventQueue-0” java.lang.NullPointerException

I am new to Arduino and C++ but learning ok at 69!

Thanks

I reinstalled the IDE but now I get

lto1.exe: internal compiler error: in lto_output_varpool_node, at lto-cgraph.c:624

when I run comboDump.ino
